The Barnabas Furniture Bank is a non-profit charity. We collect more than 15,000 pieces furniture each year that people don't want and don't need and we give it to individuals and families who do want it and desperately need it, diverting over 250,000 lbs. of waste from the landfills in the process. Simply put, we recycle furniture and restore lives. The job of Furniture Mover / Life Changer is to safely and efficiently collect and distribute donated furniture to local individuals and families who are transitioning out of homelessness, fleeing abuse, overcoming major setbacks, and living on incomes that do not meet basic needs. This position helps make the world a better place. POSITION SUMMARY: Furniture Mover / Life Changer will assist our team by helping collect furniture (lifting, loading, and unloading) from donors in the community, bring it back to our warehouse to be cleaned, sanitized, and stored; and then deliver it to the individuals and families we serve. Valid driver's license and clean driving record required (Non-DOT, Non-CDL). Must be able to lift 75 lbs. or more.

  • No felony convictions.

  • Valid NC Driver's License with clean driving record, box truck experience preferred.

Job Hours: Tuesday – Saturday (7:00am – 3:00pm)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Safely load and unload furniture from trucks and trailers
  • Safely move furniture in and around client and donor homes, taking care to not damage the furniture, the property of others, or to cause injury to yourself or others.
  • Communicate clearly and constantly with warehouse staff, truck staff and donations coordinating staff to ensure complete, accurate and efficient service to clients and donors.
  • Obeys traffic laws and follow established traffic and transportation procedures.
  • Inspects and maintains vehicle supplies and equipment, such as gas, oil, water, tires, lights, and brakes, to ensure that vehicles are in proper working condition.
  • Performs emergency repairs such as changing tires or installing light bulbs, fuses, and tire chains.
  • Keeps the truck log, documenting need for repairs and what repairs were made.
  • Reports any mechanical problems encountered with vehicles.
  • Loads and unloads trucks, to and from warehouse and to and from donation sites and clients' homes using good safety techniques and proper equipment.
  • Verifies the contents of inventory loads with donation/delivery papers.
  • Reads maps and follows written and verbal geographic directions.
  • Reports delays, accidents, or other traffic and transportation situations to warehouse office.
  • Maintains telephone contact with dispatcher to receive delivery or pick up instructions or to receive notice of changes in scheduled delivery or pick up.
  • Uses and maintains the tools and equipment found on commercial vehicles, such as lifting and carrying devices.
  • Greets clients and donors and maintains a positive reflection of The Barnabas Network.
  • Maintains a professional relationship with clients and has clients sign form indicating that they have received the items. Notifies the Warehouse Manager and the Operations Manager of any client irregularities.
  • Other duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be reliable
  • Must be able to lift 75 lbs. or more.
  • Valid NC driver's license. - Clean driving record.
  • Box truck driving experience preferred.

  • Experience driving a box truck or similar large vehicle.
  • Experience working with general public in a customer service capacity; experience working in social service organization preferred.
  • Professional appearance, manner and communication style.
  • Ability to assess a problem, call on the appropriate resources, communicate with all parties the status of the situation and offer solutions.
  • Must possess common sense, maturity, good judgment, and positive attitude.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with all segments of the population, including Barnabas volunteers, staff, clients and donors.
